How to apply for the Climate Commitment

The licence to use the Climate Commitment symbol can be granted to a company that operates in Finland and undertakes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and sets emission reduction goals towards carbon neutrality in 2035.

How to apply for the Climate Commitment

  1. Set the goal: carbon neutrality by 2035.
  2. Download the Excel form and calculation guidelines for calculating your carbon footprint from this page.
  3. Identify the sources of emissions essential to your company and compile the input data.
  4. Collect the emission factors.
  5. Calculate the carbon footprint on the Excel form downloaded from this page.
  6. Prepare a plan on measures with which emissions will reduce towards the goal.
  7. Apply for Climate Commitment.
  8. Once the application has been processed and approved, your company will be granted the right to use the Climate Commitment symbol.
  9. Communicate about the Climate Commitment to the personnel, stakeholders and customers.
  10. Reduce emissions, monitor the realisation of emission reductions and compile a report annually.

The licence to use the Climate Commitment symbol can be granted to a company that operates in Finland and undertakes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and sets emission reduction goals towards carbon neutrality in 2035. When applying for the Climate Commitment symbol licence, the company prepares an action plan on reducing emissions and reports on the progress of measures annually. The right to use the symbol is granted for one year at a time.

Emission sources and limitations of calculation

The focal points of the Climate Commitment of the Finland Chamber of Commerce are direct emissions from the company’s operations, emissions from transports of goods and emissions from the travel of personnel.

Emission reduction calculation guidelines for joining the Finland Chamber of Commerce Climate Commitment for companies and organisations:

This guideline is limited to the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions. Sources of emissions are divided into three categories in accordance with the GHG Protocol: the organisation’s direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from production (Scope 2) and other indirect emissions generated in the organisation’s value chain (Scope 3). For additional information about the GHG Protocol, see its website: www.ghgprotocol.org (in English). In the Finland Chamber of Commerce Climate Commitment, Scope 1 and Scope 2 are mandatory to calculate for companies and organisations. With regard to Scope 3, the following sources of emissions are included in the review:

  • Transports and distribution (upstream): incoming logistics, and in some cases all logistics paid for
  • Business travel
  • Commuting

Calculation process:

The Climate Commitment requires businesses and organisations to calculate their emissions once a year (by calendar year and/or financial year) using an Excel-based calculation tool that can be downloaded from this page.

The calculation is comprised of the following phases:

  1. Collect organisation-specific input data (such as electricity consumption kWh)
  2. For missing data, use statistical data or make a justified estimate
  3. Collect the emission factors (e.g. power company-specific nominal emission of sold electricity gCO2/kWh)
  4. Do the calculation on the Excel form downloaded from this page
  5. Document the sources of information
  6. Estimate uncertainties and plan the targets for development in the next calculation

Emission source-specific emission = input data * emission factor

The emissions from each source of emissions are calculated by multiplying the organisation-specific input data with the most relevant emission factor. It is very important to make sure that the input data and emission factor use the same unit when calculating (for example, energy consumption in kilowatt-hours and emission factor for kilowatt-hour). The calculation is done separately for different sources of emissions, and their result are finally summed up by emission category. The final result is reported as tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (tCO2e).

The calculation tool includes some common emission factors (for fuels, for example), but the organisation has to collect most of the data required for the calculation and enter it in the calculation template. The sources of information also need to be documented in the calculation template so that the calculation can be systematically repeated and verified by an external party, for instance. The calculation template already has some calculation formulas as examples, but because the essential sources of emissions and emission factors vary between organisations, the organisation also needs to enter some of the calculation formulas in the tool by itself. More detailed instructions for collecting input data and emission factors are provided in the calculation guide.

TIP:

If your company organises events, you can use the Tapaus calculator for determining the carbon footprint of the participants’ travel, space use, accommodation, catering and waste.

This form is currently unavailable due to the Climate Commitment calculation tool being updated.
